The words flamboyant and outlandish, i think, were created specifically for Elton John. So it is a little hard to imagine that my favourite sentimental piece is sung by this rather excessively showy singer with those silly over-the-top glasses.
But i guess we gotta accept the fact. I love Elton John and I love Your Song so much, i wonder why i took so long to blog about it. I first heard this song more than 10 years ago because it was in the soundtrack of this Japanese drama serial entitled “My Daughter is an Iguana”. The serial was some sort of a weird mixture of a modern fairytale and every young girl’s nightmare. The pretty lead actress was an iguana (yes, think Shrek here) by night and a normal high school student by day. If having to deal with this freakish trait wasn’t enough, she also had to deal with a jealous step-sister and the affections of a devoted, intelligent classmate. The serial might sound silly but it was and remains one of my favourites simply because it was, at its core, a terribly moving love story.
Every time i hear Your Song, I think of colorful rainbows, beautiful valleys and delightful gardens filled with sweet flowers.
And i also think a lot about the sort of love we all crave for- selfless, mutual, true, and simple. How it may seem easy but it actually isn’t, how sometimes we think we have gotten it but at other times we think we will never get it, how we sometimes ain’t satisfied, and how we are all confused.
I don’t have much money, but boy if i did.
I would buy a big house where we could both live.
I know it’s not much, but it is the best i can do.
My gift is my song, and this one’s for you.
I hope you don’t mind that i put down in words.
How wonderful life is while you’re in the world.
