Caught the romance flick over the weekend, and I guess I like it enough.
The premise of the show is simple- boy meets girl, the two fall in love and then break up. The girl, Summer (hence the title) doesn’t believe in love and wants to be a free agent, and well, have some fun. The guy, on the other hand, is a sweet lad who believes he can only be happy if he meets the One. Disaster combo, if you ask me.
What I liked about the film:
1) Joseph Gordon Lewitt. Man, the little dude from 3rd Rock from the Sun is all grown-up and he’s really handsome. Rather small in frame, but I like his puppy dog eyes and his very crinkly smile=) His character – a writer for the uninspired stuff you find on greeting cards- can be a pain. He wants to be an architect but is stuck penning silly verses, he collapses when jilted, he isn’t exactly what you call confident and let’s just say if another actor was to play Tom, Tom would have been blawdy irritating. I don’t even understand why he would take all that nonsense from Summer. Surely, he must know she just treats him as a plaything? But cos’ Lewitt plays Tom with the right amount of heart and vulnerability, you just find yourself rooting for him.
2) The split screens, the cute animation, and the pseudo-musical parts where Tom broke into song-and-dance. How cute!
3) Zooey Deschanel’s Summer. Deschanel is one of those girls who are just so sweet. She has a very nice pair of eyes- all wide-eyed innocence- but beyond that, there is nothing really outstanding, she’s just a typical pale brunette. But she shines, period, even though her character was quite selfish and spoilt.
What I didn’t like: I can’t identify with the film. If the movie depicts the true fickle and cruel nature of modern love, then i rather not have that at all, thank you very much. Critics are gushing about how the film is spot-on in its character portrayals, but I beg to differ. Charming and easily enjoyed definitely (thanks to the good pace and witty dialogue) but genuinely moving? Nah unless your idea of depth is witnessing a flirt of a woman toying with an innocent loser of a chap.
On a totally unrelated thread, I am still half-sick. And Queen B alarmed all of us on Monday. Man, if she is really going ahead with her plans, I will be…cannot do anything also lahz…but I didn’t know I had signed up for a sales job.
